Analyse the representations in these covers, use Van Zoonen's concept of patriarchy in your answer:



According to Van Zoonen Patriarchy is a system in which men hold social, political and economic power. Van Zoonen argues that in a patriarchal society there is a clear difference in how male and female bodies are represented. She also suggests that gender is performative and we understand masculinity and femininity by what we do. This is represented in both Sources A and B.
The Daily Mirror represents this through its 3 headlines. It's stories on Corbyn and Football feature only males of power, both politically and physically, and neglects to mention the females of both areas, even though the 'important' football news, good enough for a main headline, is only a pullout poster. The athletes are all also in typical alpha-male poses, displaying their 'superiority' as the images shown capture them mid-'roar'. The other story featured does include a female star vehicle, but is represented as the stereotypical genders roles assigned to a woman by society, her pregnancy making her a 'mother-type' and her makeup and style to make her an object of desire, suggesting that these are 'the only things' women are good for.

The Times, however, is more subtle with their potential 



Both Covers cover the same Event but are from Different Genres of Newspaper, How far has genre influenced the media language used in both sources?:

Tabloid papers, like Metro, have pages half the size of regular broadsheets, like the independent, and tend to focus on less serious stories, such as 'celeb gossip', sports, and sensationalist crime stories.
